What is a “Lean Six Sigma Engineer”? Lean Six Sigma is a Body of Knowledge that combines speed, quality, and business process improvement. A Lean Six Sigma Black Belt leads multiple projects. A LSS Engineer combines all this with Manufacturing Engineering capabilities to lead: Lean & Six Sigma process improvement initiatives, but also the technical aspects of Cell Design, special machines, and unique processes on a wide range of materials.
I studied Project Management at the University of St. Thomas, and practiced Project Management in industry. First as an engineer leading process development on the MK-19 40mm machine gun, with a team of 5 tool designers and 5 tool makers to design and build fixtures for new welding processes. Then as a Project Lead Engineer on a major component for the GE YF-120 experimental jet engine used in the YF-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter. Later I worked as a Project Manager and Systems Integration Manager leading a cross-functional team to define customer requirements, design, and build, multiple automated high-speed systems simultaneously.
I taught a course in Lean Enterprise at UW-Stout where student teams work on industry projects. I also taught Project Management applications within other courses such as Resource Planning and Quality Management.
